Milena's Story

“Music is my companion, RPSM is my family.”

Once a shy 10-year-old, Milena grew into a confident musician
and sang on stage at Massey Hall in the RPSM Vocal Quartet.

"Regent Park School Music has been the most important community I've been a part of. I moved to Toronto when I was 10, and felt really uncomfortable and lonely. Music was my companion. Luckily, my father recognized my passion and found Regent Park School of Music. He enrolled me in the choir, which led to violin lessons. Then, there was an opening for private voice lessons, which I jumped at.

Not only did RPSM teach me music, it has also invited me into its family. I have had so many great teachers and made amazing friends. There were exciting performance opportunities, too – I got to sing with the RPSM Vocal Quartet to a packed house at Massey Hall with Daniel Lanois at Luminato.

I graduated in 2016 and am now in second-year university at Ryerson studying nursing. I still sing and play music when I’m not stuck in my studies, and recently learned a beautiful song on the ukulele. I’ve picked up a lot of things in my life, and then set them aside, but RPSM is the one thing that I have never let go of. In fact I’m still here − working at the school on Saturdays making all the kids feel as welcome as I did. I am so humbled and proud to still be a part of this great place and can't wait to see what they have in store for future students. Thank you.”
